Lee named HMNTL director

Minjoo Larry Lee has been selected to serve as the next director of the Nick Holonyak Jr. Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory (HMNTL) effective January 16, 2023.

Lee holds a Ph.D. from MIT and joined the ECE department in 2016 as an associate professor. He is now a tenured professor in the ECE department. He is a leader in the field of compound semiconductors, especially III-V materials and devices for integrated photonics, solar energy, electronics, and sensing. He was awarded the Dean's Award for Excellence in Research, Associate Professor, in 2021, and is a previous recipient of the NSF CAREER and DARPA Young Faculty Awards. His research group has won several best student presentation awards at major international conferences.

Lee currently serves as the interim director of HMNTL.

"[Larry]  has played an important role in strategic planning initiatives for HMNTL," said Rashid Bashir, dean of The Grainger College of Engineering in a statement about the selection. "He is an active researcher and leader within the lab itself. He has been a strong advocate for HMNTL and I’m excited to work with him in the coming years."
