Building Access for External Users

Listed below are the requirements for access to HMNTL. All steps must be completed before access can be granted. Please reach out to hmntl-access@illinois.edu with any questions.

Building Access Requirements

Access Request

Complete the Facility Use Form. Management will review and reach out typically within 3 business days with questions or begin the Facility Use Agreement process. An agreement must be in place before work can be started. Time required for the approval process varies and is typically 2-4 weeks; each proposal is unique and must be carefully evaluated. Then a Facilities Use Agreement and/or Technical Testing Agreement will be generated for signature by your company or institution.

Building Safety

Before using the facilities, certain safety trainings are necessary. Please follow the requirements for the facility that you applied to use. To complete some of the trainings, you will need to reach out to UIUC DRS to create a temporary profile.

Cleanroom

  • Watch the two videos, Chemical Safety and Building Alarms.
  • Complete the Building Safety Quiz
  • Once you have DRS access, the Lab Safety and HF trainings are needed.

Bio Lab

  • Watch the two videos, Chemical Safety and Building Alarms.
  • Complete the Building Safety Quiz
  • Once you have DRS access, the Lab Safety, Understanding Biosafety and Safe Handling of Human Cell Lines/Materials in a Research Laboratory*
  • Read and understand the HMNTL BioNano Lab Standard Operating Procedures then complete and return the Biological Safety Awareness Certificate to hmntl-access@illinois.edu.

*Only needed if handling Biosafety Level-2 agents, including:

  • Recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules (even work that is exempt from the NIH guidelines must be registered - see additional notes)
  • Transgenic animals (use or creation)
  • Transgenic plants
  • Pathogens (human, animal, or plant)
  • Human materials (cell lines; blood, blood products, tissues, any bodily fluid)
  • Nonhuman primate (NHP) materials (cell lines, blood, blood products, tissues, any bodily fluid)
  • Biotoxins
